Tamara J. Hawk, LSCSW, ACSW, has been in private practice since 1989. She offers psychotherapy based on Bowen theory to individuals, couples, and family groups for concerns or symptoms of adjustment, health and emotional functioning. She licensed as a Specialist Clinical Social Worker in the state of Kansas and can accept insurance payments and diagnose/ treat mental disorders, behavioral and emotional problems.

She has experience and special interest with adults and children in working with problems involving eating disorders, children with behavioral and school problems, anxiety, depression, marital problems, family relationship problems, chronic illness, and a variety of concerns.

Treatment for eating disorders is a special clinical and research interest for Mrs. Hawk. Although there are literally hundreds of thousands of research articles on EDs, there continues to be an absense of a coherent view of the problem. The research does point to some important factors:

1) Patients with EDs have a high level of anxiety, depression, and need for approval.

2) Patients are more sensitive and vulnerable to family tensions and conflicts than their siblilngs or non-affected peers. This sensitivity often creates anxiety around digestion (symptoms), appearance, perfection, and acheivement.

3) Family members can assist in the recovery by actively participating in therapy. Parents are important sources of information and action that can lead to recovery.

4) Relapse is common after discharge from inpatient units. The family and the patient both worry about relapse. Life outside of the unit is a very different experience and the types of controls used in-patient are often not possible in family life. Family members have a specific function in supporting the patient after discharge. These facts are an important part of the therapy.

ADOPTION HOME STUDIES:

Ms. Hawk has a long standing interest in services to adoptive families and their children and has worked in this field for 30 years. She is court approved for Adoption Home Studies and services to adoptive and birth families involved in private legal or agency adoptions.

The home study usually involves three office visits and a home visit which are scheduled at the time you complete the contract for services. Fees are by the hour and vary based on your family circumstances and the amount of documentation work necessary for your family. Background Finger Print checks are required in Kansas and take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. Usually the home study report can be completed while waiting on these documents.

In additon to completing the home study and all background checks, she counsels birth families and adoptive families about adoption options and decisions and mediates open adoption contracts between birth parents and adoptive parents. Fees for adoptions are based on individual needs.

OUT OF STATE ADOPTION AGENCIES for DOMESTIC And INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS.
If you have planned to contract with an out of town or out of state agency for your homestudy, they will sometimes contract with a local social worker to complete the study rather than travel to this area. If you have a question about working with an out of town or out of state agency, please call to discuss your options.

GRANDPARENT or RELATIVE ADOPTION
In Kansas, the court has the option to waive the background home study in some circumstances for grandparents or other family members adopting a child. If you have questions about this change in KS law (effective July 2007), those can be answered by a family attorney.

Often the court wants some background information on the families relationship with the child and the criminal background report as a minimum. Home Study Fees are adjusted for "mini family homestudies" in some of these circumstances.

PLEASE NOTE: Tamara J. Hawk, Inc. is not a licensed Child Placing agency and does not take physical custody of children for placement or have the care of any children awaiting placment. The work is done through your private attorney or a licensed child placing agency.

Current Research Project

Changes in clinical treatment over the past 30 years have excluded family therapy as the primary model for treatment of eating disorders. Treatment has become increasingly individually oriented, involving more and more providers, frequent hospitalizations, and the condition is often viewed as chronic and separated from other psychicatric disorders. Myths and facts about family functioning around eating disorders have resulted more and more in the treatment team being put in place to replace the functioning of the family, with the family being increasingly cut out of the treatment process.
Unlike other psychiatric disorders, anorexia and bulimia are rarely viewed in the context of the family's level of differentiation but seen as a freakish, unexplained anomally.
The research projects looks at the extended family history and individual treatment data of 70 young women with bulimia and anorexia. It seeks to address the question about the role of family functioning prior to the onset of the problem and seek out new facts that can more clearly define areas to target in treatment. Facts about families take the mystery out of the disorder and point to the need for a high level of parental / spousal involvment in the treatment process. The multicase study is currently in progress.
